Homology

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005376

The state of having a shared ancestry between a pair of structures or genes in different taxa. It is an inference that two features share a common evolutionary origin, even if their current functions differ. For instance, the forelimbs of humans, bats, and whales are considered homologous, all having evolved from the forelimb of a common mammalian ancestor.
