Immobilized enzyme
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005631
An enzyme that is physically confined or localized in a defined region of space while retaining its catalytic activity. The confinement is achieved by methods such as covalent bonding to a solid support, entrapment within a gel matrix, encapsulation within a membrane, or cross-linking of enzyme aggregates. Immobilized glucose isomerase, for instance, is used industrially to produce high-fructose corn syrup from glucose.
