Impaction

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005721

The process by which airborne particles, due to their inertia, deviate from the flow of a gas stream and deposit onto a surface. This occurs when the gas flow changes direction abruptly, but the particles' momentum causes them to continue in their original path. Impaction is a primary mechanism for the collection of larger aerosol particles in air sampling devices.
