Impact-modified polymer
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005722
A polymer material whose resistance to fracture under sudden, high-velocity impact has been enhanced by the inclusion of a second, elastomeric phase. This is typically achieved by blending a rigid polymer matrix, such as polystyrene or polypropylene, with a rubbery polymer that forms dispersed domains within the matrix. High-impact polystyrene (HIPS), which incorporates polybutadiene rubber, is a widely produced example of this material class.
