Infinite dilution

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-005825

A hypothetical state where a solute is dissolved in a solvent at such a low concentration that each solute molecule is completely surrounded by solvent molecules, with no interactions between solute molecules. In this condition, the activity coefficient of the solute approaches unity. Thermodynamic properties extrapolated to infinite dilution provide intrinsic characteristics of the solute-solvent interaction.
