Inverse Bremsstrahlung

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006047

The absorption of electromagnetic radiation by free electrons in the presence of an ion, where the electron gains energy from the photon. This process is the reverse of Bremsstrahlung, where an electron loses energy by emitting a photon when decelerated by an ion. Inverse Bremsstrahlung is a mechanism for heating plasmas, particularly in laser-plasma interactions, and its rate depends on electron density, temperature, and radiation intensity.
