Inverse square law

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006056

A physical principle stating that the intensity of a quantity radiating from a point source decreases in proportion to the square of the distance from that source. This relationship applies to phenomena such as electromagnetic radiation, gravity, and electrostatic fields, assuming propagation without obstruction or scattering. For example, doubling the distance from a gamma-ray source reduces the radiation intensity to one-quarter of its initial value.
