Sieverts’ law
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013552
A relation under which the concentration of a diatomic gas dissolved in a metal varies as the square root of the equilibrium pressure of the gas. The square root appears because each molecule splits into two atoms on dissolving, as in the reaction ½H2 giving H in the metal, so the law applies to gases that dissociate in the lattice. It is applied to hydrogen in palladium, and deviations from it appear at high hydrogen content.
