Inverted region

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006065

A regime in electron transfer reactions where increasing the exergonicity (driving force) of the reaction leads to a decrease in the reaction rate, rather than an increase. This behavior is predicted by the Marcus theory of electron transfer and occurs when the reorganization energy is less than the free energy change. In this region, the activation barrier for electron transfer begins to rise again.
