Reorganization energy

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010184

The Gibbs energy needed to bring the nuclei of a reactant and its surrounding solvent from their equilibrium arrangement to the arrangement that is at equilibrium for the product, while the electron stays on the donor. It is the sum of an inner part from the redox partners' own bond changes and an outer part from solvent reorganization, λ = λin + λout. In Marcus theory the barrier at zero driving force equals one quarter of λ.
