Irritant
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006162
A substance that produces a reversible inflammatory effect on living tissues, such as skin or mucous membranes, at the site of contact. The reaction is a direct local effect and does not involve an immunological mechanism like sensitization, nor does it cause permanent tissue destruction like a corrosive. Irritation effects are assessed and classified based on standardized protocols, such as the OECD test guidelines for skin and eye irritation.
