Liquid membrane

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006682

A liquid phase that forms a barrier between two other phases and so works as a membrane, either supported in the pores of a solid or unsupported. Solutes cross it by dissolving and diffusing through the liquid, and a carrier molecule dissolved in it can speed this up for a chosen solute, as in facilitated transport of metal ions. One unsupported form is the emulsion liquid membrane, an oil film around aqueous droplets.
