Mental retardation

A condition characterized by significantly subaverage general intellectual functioning, accompanied by deficits in adaptive behavior, manifested during the developmental period. This impairment affects cognitive abilities such as reasoning, problem-solving, and learning, as well as practical, social, and conceptual skills. The term is now largely replaced by 'intellectual disability' in clinical and scientific contexts.
