Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007404

A region of DNA consisting of tandemly repeated nucleotide sequences, typically 10 to 100 base pairs in length. The number of repeats at a particular locus can vary significantly among individuals, making them highly polymorphic. These variations are used in genetic fingerprinting, paternity testing, and studies of genetic linkage.
