Most-sensitive-species approach

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007594

A method used in ecotoxicology to determine environmental quality standards by focusing on the species most susceptible to a particular contaminant. This approach assumes that protecting the most sensitive species will indirectly protect other, less sensitive species within the ecosystem. It often involves identifying the lowest observed effect concentration for a given chemical.
