Mucociliary transport
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013308
A primary defense mechanism of the respiratory system that involves the coordinated beating of cilia to move mucus and trapped foreign particles out of the airways. This continuous clearance mechanism protects the lungs from inhaled pathogens and irritants. Impairment of this system can lead to respiratory infections and chronic lung diseases.
