Respiratory burst

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010264

A rapid increase in the production of reactive oxygen species, such as superoxide radicals and hydrogen peroxide, by phagocytic cells like neutrophils and macrophages. This process is a defense mechanism used to kill invading microorganisms. The respiratory burst is initiated by the activation of NADPH oxidase enzymes.
