Catalase

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001700

An enzyme containing iron or manganese that catalyzes the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. This reaction is vital for protecting cells from oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species. Catalase has one of the highest turnover rates among all enzymes, with a single molecule capable of converting millions of hydrogen peroxide molecules per second.
