Chronic granulomatous disease

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002061

A group of inherited immunodeficiency disorders characterized by the inability of phagocytic cells, such as neutrophils and macrophages, to produce reactive oxygen species. This defect impairs the respiratory burst, which is necessary for killing certain bacteria and fungi, leading to recurrent, life-threatening infections. The condition is caused by mutations in the genes encoding subunits of the NADPH oxidase enzyme complex and results in the formation of granulomas as the body attempts to wall off pathogens.
