Mucus
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007616
A viscous, aqueous secretion produced by and covering mucous membranes throughout the body, including in the respiratory, digestive, and reproductive tracts. Composed primarily of water, electrolytes, and a network of glycoproteins called mucins, it serves to protect epithelial cells from dehydration, pathogens, and physical or chemical damage. The consistency and composition of mucus vary depending on its location and physiological state.
