Mucous membrane

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007615

A moist lining composed of an epithelium and an underlying layer of connective tissue, called the lamina propria, which separates the epithelium from deeper structures. This membrane lines many internal cavities and organs of the body, including the digestive, respiratory, and urogenital tracts. It secretes mucus, which lubricates and protects the surfaces.
