Neutralized gel
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007912
A polymer gel in which the acid or base groups of the network have been reacted with base or acid, leaving them as charged salt groups with counterions. Neutralizing a weakly acidic network such as crosslinked poly(acrylic acid) ionizes its groups and raises the osmotic pressure of the counterions, so the gel swells strongly. Sodium polyacrylate superabsorbent gels are commonly about 60 to 75 percent neutralized.
