Non-graphitic carbon

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008022

A solid consisting mainly of carbon whose atoms form planar sp2 hexagonal networks with long-range order within each layer, but with no detectable order along the stacking axis beyond roughly parallel layers. Cokes, chars, carbon blacks and glass-like carbon belong here. Graphitizable members turn into graphite on heating to about 3000 K, whereas non-graphitizable ones such as glass-like carbon do not.
