Non-equilibrium reaction

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008021

A reaction whose reactants are not initially distributed over their energy states according to a Boltzmann distribution, so the reacting molecules do not share a single temperature. Examples include reactions of hot atoms, of chemically activated molecules, and of reagents prepared in crossed molecular beams. Ordinary thermal reactions, by contrast, start from a Boltzmann distribution at one temperature.
