Equilibrium reaction

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004068

A reaction whose reactants start with a Boltzmann distribution of energies, so its rate constant is the thermally averaged one; this contrasts with non-equilibrium cases such as chemically activated molecules, whose energy distribution is not thermal. Everyday usage also applies the phrase to a reversible reaction at chemical equilibrium, where forward and reverse rates are equal and concentrations stay constant.
