Poisson-Boltzmann equation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009070
A non-linear partial differential equation that describes the electrostatic potential in a solution containing charged molecules and ions. It is derived from the Poisson equation, which relates electric potential to charge density, and the Boltzmann distribution, which describes the statistical distribution of ions in an electric field. This equation is widely used in computational chemistry to model the behavior of biomolecules in aqueous environments.
