Odor threshold

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008197

The lowest airborne concentration of a substance that a stated fraction of a human population, often half of a trained panel, can perceive by smell. Values come from sensory testing in which panelists sniff dilution series under controlled conditions, and each substance has its own figure. Hydrogen sulfide, with its rotten-egg smell, is detected at about 0.5 parts per billion.
