Ortho acids

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008333

The formal addition products of water to the carboxy group of a carboxylic acid, resulting in a structure with a carbon atom bonded to three hydroxyl groups (a 1,1,1-triol). These compounds are typically unstable and exist as transient intermediates in certain reactions, such as the hydrolysis of ortho esters. While most ortho acids are not isolable, stable examples of their derivatives, ortho esters, are well known, such as triethyl orthoformate.
