Ortho-fused
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008337
Describing a polycyclic system where two rings share exactly two adjacent atoms, forming a common bond. This type of fusion is common in aromatic and heterocyclic compounds, leading to a planar or nearly planar molecular structure. Naphthalene is a classic example of an ortho-fused bicyclic aromatic hydrocarbon.
