Partial specific volume

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008496

The rate at which the volume of a system grows with the mass of one added component, that is the volume change divided by the mass of a small added amount, at constant temperature, pressure and amounts of the other components. Its SI unit is m3 per kg, and it is the reciprocal of the partial mass density. For a protein in solution it is typically near 0.73 cm3 per g, a value used with sedimentation data to find molar mass.
