Phenolates

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008752

Anions derived from phenols by the deprotonation of the phenolic hydroxyl group. These species possess a negatively charged oxygen atom directly attached to an aromatic ring. Phenolates are resonance-stabilized and are stronger nucleophiles than their corresponding phenols, often participating in reactions such as Williamson ether synthesis.
