Diosphenols

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003230

Cyclic alpha-diketones that exist predominantly in the enol form, so that the enolic hydroxyl sits on the carbon next to the remaining carbonyl, giving a 2-hydroxy-2-en-1-one unit. Cyclohexane-1,2-dione is an example, existing largely as 2-hydroxycyclohex-2-en-1-one. The enolic hydroxyl is acidic enough that diosphenols give a color with iron(III) chloride, as phenols do.
