Dioxin

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003231

A common name for a group of toxic, persistent, and bioaccumulative chlorinated organic compounds, specifically polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs). These compounds are not produced intentionally but are formed as unintentional byproducts in processes like waste incineration, chemical manufacturing, and paper bleaching. The most toxic congener is 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), which is a known human carcinogen and environmental pollutant regulated at very low concentrations.
