Transplacental carcinogen
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012258
A substance that can induce cancer in offspring when the mother is exposed to it during pregnancy, with the carcinogen crossing the placental barrier to affect the developing fetus. These agents can cause genetic damage or alter developmental processes in the fetus, leading to an increased risk of malignancy later in life. Diethylstilbestrol (DES) is a well-known example of a transplacental carcinogen.
