Toxicity equivalency factor
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012164
A numerical value assigned to a specific congener of a toxic chemical, such as a dioxin or furan, to express its toxicity relative to a reference compound, typically 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). These factors allow for the calculation of a single toxicity equivalent for mixtures of related compounds. TEFs are used in risk assessment to estimate the overall toxicity of complex environmental contaminants.
