Picrates
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008965
Salts or complexes formed between picric acid (2,4,6-trinitrophenol) and a base, metal ion, or organic compound. Picric acid is a strong acid due to the electron-withdrawing nitro groups, and its anion, the picrate ion, can form stable crystalline adducts. These compounds are often highly colored and were historically used for the characterization and purification of organic bases, as well as in explosives.
