Piezoluminescence

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008969

The emission of light from a solid material when it is subjected to mechanical pressure. This phenomenon occurs when the application of stress, such as crushing or grinding, causes charge separation within the crystal lattice, leading to electronic excitation and subsequent radiative decay. Piezoluminescence is a specific form of mechanoluminescence and is closely related to triboluminescence, which results from friction or fracture.
