Pile-up

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008970

An artifact in radiation detection where two or more closely spaced radiation events are registered as a single, higher-energy event by the detector. This occurs when the time interval between successive events is shorter than the detector's processing time. It can lead to distortion of energy spectra and inaccurate counting rates.
