Polymer clathrate
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009159
A type of polymer co-crystal whose host is the crystalline polymer and whose guests are small molecules sitting inside molecular-sized cages or cavities, often several guests to a cavity. Because the guest need not be polymeric, a clathrate belongs to the polymer co-crystal family rather than standing apart from it. Syndiotactic polystyrene, for example, forms clathrates with small organic molecules, and removing the guest leaves a nanoporous crystal.
