Cavitands

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012954

Synthetic organic compounds that contain an enforced, rigid concave cavity large enough to bind other molecules. Their pre-organized structure distinguishes them from clathrands, which form their cavity during the process of crystallization with a guest molecule. Cavitands are a subclass of host molecules that includes calixarenes and cyclodextrins, which form inclusion complexes with suitable guest species.
