Prior probability
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009480
The probability assigned to a parameter or a hypothesis before any empirical evidence is taken into account. It represents the initial degree of belief in a proposition based on previous knowledge or a subjective assessment. In the context of Bayes's theorem, the prior probability is multiplied by the likelihood function to yield the posterior probability, which reflects the updated belief after considering new data.
