Pyrogen

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-009702

Any substance that induces fever when introduced into the body. These substances can be exogenous, such as bacterial endotoxins, or endogenous, like certain cytokines released by immune cells. Pyrogens act by stimulating the release of prostaglandins in the hypothalamus, which then reset the body's thermoregulatory set point.
