Radial sectioning
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013466
A sample preparation method for depth analysis in which the surface is polished with a rotating cylinder to cut a curved crater, exposing compositional changes below the original surface. The depth of each layer is related to its lateral position on the polished surface, so a small-probe surface analysis technique can scan across the crater to build a depth profile. Ball cratering is the related method that uses a sphere in place of a cylinder.
