A scanning pattern in which a focused beam or probe is moved across a surface along closely spaced parallel lines, so that an image or map of the surface is built up point by point. It is used in surface analysis methods such as secondary ion mass spectrometry. The spatial resolution of the map is set mainly by the probe size and the spacing between points and lines, while the dwell time at each point governs the counting statistics and noise.
