Reflection-absorption at grazing incidence
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010093
A spectroscopic technique for studying thin films on reflective surfaces, where p-polarized infrared or other electromagnetic radiation strikes the surface at a very high angle of incidence. The electric field component perpendicular to the surface is amplified upon reflection, selectively increasing the absorption signal from molecular vibrations with dipole moments oriented normal to the surface. The optimal signal is typically achieved at an angle of incidence between 80 and 89 degrees from the surface normal.
