Retention effect

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010287

The tendency of highly lipophilic persistent organic pollutants to be held more firmly by soil and vegetation than less lipophilic ones. Because they are bound in these solid phases they spend less time in the air and are less available for atmospheric transport. More lipophilic compounds, such as highly chlorinated PCB congeners, are therefore retained more strongly than lighter ones.
