Rotamer
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010412
A conformer that arises from hindered rotation about a single bond and sits at a minimum on the potential energy curve for that rotation. Rotamers interconvert by twisting about the bond without breaking it, and they can be observed separately only when the barrier is high enough. Butane has one anti rotamer and two mirror-image gauche rotamers, separated by barriers of roughly 15 to 25 kJ/mol.
