Sacrificial donor
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010473
A molecular entity that supplies the electron in a photoinduced electron transfer and is then destroyed by an irreversible chemical reaction, so it is never regenerated. Its consumption blocks back electron transfer, letting the reduced product of the partner accumulate. Triethanolamine, EDTA and methanol are typical sacrificial donors in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.
