Saturable elimination
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010523
A pharmacokinetic process where the rate of elimination of a substance from the body becomes constant once a certain concentration is reached, due to the limited capacity of the enzymes or transporters involved. At low concentrations, elimination is typically first-order, but as concentrations increase, the elimination pathways become saturated. This leads to a disproportionate increase in drug levels with increasing dose, as seen with ethanol metabolism.
