Β-elimination
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001178
An elimination reaction in which two atoms or groups are removed from adjacent carbon atoms, specifically the α-carbon (bearing the leaving group) and the β-carbon (bearing the atom or group that is removed). This process typically results in the formation of a new pi bond between the α and β carbons. Common examples include the dehydration of alcohols and the dehydrohalogenation of alkyl halides, leading to alkenes.
